Tom’s brother has ‘the measles’ so Tom's been sent away to stay with his childless aunt and uncle who have no idea how to entertain him. He is lonely at first, but this soon changes when, lying awake in bed, he hears the old grandfather clock in the hall strike … thirteen! Curious and confused, Tom creeps downstairs and starts an amazing journey through time and space, which sees him discover a magical Victorian garden and befriend an unhappy orphan called Hatty.
